A Family’s Guide to Winter Fun at Apex Mountain Resort

Apex Mountain Resort - Penticton

For an unforgettable family outing, whether it’s for a day or an entire weekend, Apex Mountain Resort is your go-to destination. With activities ranging from skiing and skating to tubing, plus rentals, eateries, and shops, it’s got it all. After spending just a day there, we found ourselves wishing we had planned a weekend staycation to fully dive into all the mountain has to offer.

Tim Hortons Tube Park

The entire family loved the Tube Park from our youngest 5-year-old daughter to my 44-year-old husband. Enjoy a single or double tube and choose to go down the hill alone or hold onto another tube.

Children must be over 42 inches to ride on their own. If they are under 42 inches, not a problem, they can share a double tube with an adult or you can hold onto single tubes side by side as you coast down the hill. The tube ride lasts approximately one minute.

At the bottom of the hill, grab your tube and catch a ride to the top on the magic carpet ride. It’s fairly easy for the kids to get on and off on the magic carpet ride.

Tube passes are good for two hours, which was plenty of time for our young family. If you need additional time, you can purchase it by the hour. Family fun tip: Make sure the kids have gloves, toques, and face coverings. Ski goggles are a bonus!

Adventure Skating Loop

A unique feature of Apex Mountain is its outdoor skating loop. The loop is surrounded by trees which you get to skate around. You can purchase skating loop tickets at the office or rental shop. Bring your skates or rent them from the rental shop. The Zamboni will maintain the ice daily but depending on the time of day and how much snowfall, there may be snow on the ice.

Skiing/Snowboarding

Apex Mountain boasts four fun-filled terrain parks, each tailored to different skill levels. While we didn’t hit the slopes this time, we’re excited to enroll the kids in ski lessons on our next mountain adventure.

Little Nuggets Terrain Park

The Little Nugget Terrain Park is buzzing with kiddos taking their first ski strides, with help from parents, instructors, or bravely on their own. It’s the perfect spot for beginners to learn, fall, and get right back up, boosting their confidence with every slide. Plus, the magic carpet ride is a fun way for them to zip back to the top!

Dining

Village Cafeteria

This is your go-to spot to munch on your own snacks, grab a slice from Steezy’s, or simply chill out. With washrooms on-site, it’s super convenient but heads up—it can get bustling at peak times!

The Gunbarrel Saloon

The Gunbarrel Saloon is the perfect spot to warm up and unwind, offering a menu packed with good food. Whether you’re craving a juicy burger, a fresh salad, cheesy nachos, or a warm soup, they’ve got you covered. And yes, there’s a little something for the grown-ups too with a selection of drinks to cheers to a fun-filled day!

The Edge Bistro

Located near the Mountain Shop, the Edge Bistro serves up a delicious mix of coffees, pastries, soups, and sandwiches. Quick, convenient, and boasting a ski-in, ski-out takeaway window, it’s a breeze to grab a bite. Just order online and swoosh over to pick up your goodies as soon as you’re notified they’re ready.

Steezy Slices

Steezy Slices is a hit for a quick bite that the kids will like. With a menu featuring pizza slices, hot dogs, fries, and more, you will surely find something to satisfy those cravings. We enjoyed hot dogs, poutine, and hot chocolate during our visit. You’ll find it inside the Village Cafeteria.

Longshots Steak House

We haven’t dined at Longshots Steak House yet, but it’s on our list for our next weekend stay on the mountain. It appears to be an ideal spot for a kid-free date night, offering a blend of casual and fine dining. Booking a table is recommended to secure your spot. Plus, they offer lunch on select days, no reservation is needed.

The Artisan’s Den

This is a place to get a coffee or pastry. If you are feeling like an alcoholic beverage, flatbread pizza, or charcuterie plate those are available as well.

Shops

Mountain Shop

For all your ski essentials, equipment, and gear, the Mountain Shop is your one-stop destination. Inside, you’ll find skilled technicians ready to assist with repairs or give your equipment a quick sharpening and wax.

The General Store

The General Store is your all-in-one spot, perfect for day-trippers or overnight cabin dwellers. Stock up on a wide variety of groceries and beverages. Plus, they offer ready-to-go lunch options for your convenience.

Peak Sweets

The candy store easily won the title of the kids’ most loved spot. We gave them the green light to fill a bag with their top picks of gummies and lollipops for the car ride back down the mountain. With a variety of chocolates and popcorn available, there was something sweet for everyone to enjoy.

The Rental Shop

The rental shop boasts an extensive range of skis, snowboards, and gear, catering to all skill levels, whether it’s you or the kids hitting the slopes. Plus, they offer skates for those looking to glide around the Adventure Skating Loop.

Accommodations

Numerous condos and chalets are up for grabs on the mountain. While we missed out on an overnight stay this time, we’re planning to spend a few days at Apex Mountain on our next trip, soaking in all it has to offer. We’re even considering booking a larger chalet to bring the grandparents and other family members along for a mini-reunion staycation.

Driving

The journey up the mountain takes roughly 35-40 minutes, featuring a winding route with plenty of curves. Before setting off, check your gas tank—there are no fuel stations at the top. Ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires for a safe trip. Once there, you’ll find ample parking. We’re keen to explore more on our next visit!
